House Mouse

(Mus musculus)

This is one of the most common mice you will find in your home. House mice are known for adapting very quickly, making it easy for them to navigate the home. They can also cause property damage and possibly  contaminate food.

Appearance

Their fur ranges from a brown to dark gray color with lighter-colored bellies. They're quite small, only averaging about 3-4 inches in body length. They have round bodies with larger ears and a thin, long tail averaging about 2-3 inches.

Signs Of Activity

There are a few indicators, you may see mouse droppings (3-6 mm) around any areas they frequent. They'll leave behind footprints, 4 toes on the front feet and 5 on the back. You may also see chewing/gnawing marks on items near their routes.

Deer Mouse

(Peromyscus maniculatus)

Deer Mice are often found nesting outside in protective wooded areas or hollow trees. If a home is near by, they may try to occupy it during the colder months for food and solid shelter such as an attic, garage, or shed.

Appearance

They're about 3-4 inches in length with a bicolored tail about 2-3 inches (dark on the top and light on the bottom). They have a brown-red colored coat of fur with a lighter belly, and ears with little to no hair on them.

Signs Of Activity

Similar to the House Mouse, there will be droppings around their nesting areas as well as damaged corners due to chewing. You'll see hidden nests made of paper, seeds, grass, and other natural materials.
